Hey guys. Welcome to the Center of Biomedical Technology. Come in. Welcome to this MOOC on foundation of mining non-structured medical data. The aim of this MOOC is to provide you basic skills and competencies about medical information, how to retrieve it, how to structure it, and how to work with it. The course will be taught by Ernestina Menasalvas , Consuelo Gonzalo, and me. I'm Alejandro Rodriguez, and I would like to tell you a story that is related with the MOOC that you are going to course the following days or weeks. So, in 2014, I was in Thailand during a trip for the whole country, and I did three things that you should not do ever in Thailand. The first thing is that I did rafting. I was rafting in a river. The second one is that I eat a scorpion, and the third one is that I did a tattoo. In the first one, when I was doing the rafting, I fall into the river, and I was about to drown. I was about to die. I thought that was my last-minute in there, but luckily it was not. As you can see, I survived. But when I came back to Spain, a couple of days later after arriving, I started to feel very sick. I go to my GP, my biomedical doctor, and he told me that "That's nothing. Don't worry. Take paracetamol. It's some kind of medic thing." I was surprised taking into account that I ate a scorpion. I did rafting. I did a tattoo, but it's pretty good. No problem. The thing is that I continue feeling really seek during several days, so finally, I go to the hospital. When I go to the hospital, they start to make me some tests because they saw that I was really sick. I had jaundice with the eyes with color yellow, and I was dehydrated. So, they started to doing me some tests but all of them were negative. So finally, they decided to give me a treatment, an antibiotic, and I recover. I go to my home with the diagnosis of fever traveler. But a couple of months later, when I come back to do some tests, they told me that finally one of the results give positive and was leptospirosis, that it's basically a disease caused by a bacteria called leptospira that is in the urinary tract. So, the point of this story and the relation with the MOOC is that we need to create, we need to mine, we need to work in terms of the medical domain to assist the physicians in order to help them. A physician is a person, and it's a person that has, like any other person, a limited capacity in terms of memory or even computation taking into account all the variables, all the possibilities. So, this MOOC will allow you to get the basic skills that will allow you or will lead you in the future, for example, creating new diagnostic systems or will provide you information or skills about how to take into account many other different variables that are relevant in the medical field and work with all this information. So, the syllabus of the MOOC you already checked, it's based on several groups, several sections, where three of them are quite important. One related with the information that is contained in text. Mining textual information, for example, from electronic health records or digital record. On the other hand, we have the analysis of images, images like X-ray, aspect, CT, et cetera, that also it's really important and really relevant. Finally, we have the data analysis, the Pew data analysis that belongs to these data mining field that will allow you to, once you have all the information that you have taken from these non-structured sources, how to deal with that, how to analyze them, how to create, for example, classification models, prediction models based on these data. So, the MOOC will provide you the basics, the basic information, the basic skills that will allow you in the future to be able to create more complex systems that can help in the decision-making process of the medicine, and for hence, can help to help people.
